Taking a leap in the history of the town, it was Adi Shankara who re-established Badrinath as a pious pilgrimage site in the 7th century. The town lies between the Nar and Narayan mountains and watches the Alaknanda River flow along. Pilgrims, mostly Vaishnavites, plan a Badrinath tour to visit the holy shrine, which is one of the 108 Divya Desams. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshiped as Lord Badri here. According to the legends, Adi Shankaracharya found a black stone image made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River, resembling Lord Badrinarayan. The saint enshrined the stone in a cave close to the Tapt Kund (thermal spring). With the coming of the 16th century, the idol was moved to the present temple by the King of Garhwal.
